Visiting Our Museum

Founded in 2012, the Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum is currently housed in a former cotton warehouse at 306 Bradley St. in Carrollton, Georgia. The museum’s main entrance is on the south side of the building. Free public parking is available near the museum on a first come basis. Designated handicapped parking spaces are available by the west door. Both entrances do have accessibility ramps. SQTM currently shares the county owned building with two other offices. The museum features three galleries, a classroom space with library, and a consignment-based gift shop.

The Southeastern Quilt & Textile Museum (SQTM), is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to education and presentation of quilts and textiles. The SQTM collects, exhibits, preserves, promotes and interprets the heritage, art and production of quilting and textiles in the southeastern US.

Our History

In 1998, members of the Georgia Quilt Project and The Georgia Quilt Council planned and advocated for the creation of a quilt and textile museum in the southeast. A newly formed committee known as Friends of the Quilt Museum encouraged Carrollton, GA due to local hospitality and less traffic than a major metropolitan city. In 2009, The Georgia Quilt Council formally selected Carrollton as the home of what would become the Southeastern Quilt & Textile Museum (SQTM).

Jane Kingsley, Beverly Hammack, Sandy Gowing and Marilyn Osterkamp met with the late Commissioner Bill Chappell, who allowed SQTM the use of a remodeled portion of the historic cotton warehouse located at 306 Bradley Street Suite C in Carrollton’s Historic Downtown. On September 15, 2012, the SQTM enthusiastically opened its doors to the public. The Georgia Quilt Council had issued a call to guilds across the state for quilts. That collection was exhibited at the Georgia State Capitol building on January 1, 2012, and became the “Capitol Collection.”

What We’ve Achieved

  • The Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum highlights various textile art styles by many artists and has hosted over 50 exhibits since the museum’s founding.

  • We receive visitors from most states and multiple countries each year.

  • In 2023, the museum taught 22 adult classes in everything from sewing and quilting to embroidery and crochet.

  • Each summer the museum holds four sessions of Quilt Camp with personalized mentors. This program has reached over 300 children since its founding.

  • Our museum would not be possible without the support of 50+ museum volunteers each year.

  • The gift shop boasts many unique gifts made by 17 different local consignment artists.

  • We have over 200 quilts in our permanent collection (please note these are not all on display).

  • Our library has over 2,200 books on quilting and textiles.

  • We are a proud member of NARM – North American Reciprocal Museum Association.

  • Military Families appreciate that we are a Blue Star Museum.

Our Future

As our visitation and program numbers continue to increase, our museum needs more space. We are currently planning for our next chapter as our museum grows in popularity.
