Jelly Roll Rug Class

  • Southeastern Quilt & Textile Museum 306 Bradley St. STE C Carrollton, GA 30117 United States (map)

This class has been cancelled.

Join us for learning how to make a Jelly Roll rug on March 9 and 30th from 10:00 – 2:00 pm. Please note, the second session has been changed to allow for more time to work on your rug between classes. Please see below for supply list and preparation before the class. Participants must pre-register and complete the pre-class requirements before class. The class will cost $60, which includes the jelly roll rug pattern booklet.

Fabric Requirements:

1 Jelly Roll (42 – 2 ½” x WOF strips) *You can choose to use pre-cut 2 ½” strips or cut your own. You can also choose how many strips to use. Using 42 – 2 ½” strips yields a rug that measures approximately 30” x 44”.

Cotton Batting Strips (17 – 2 ¼”  x 96”)   OR  You can purchase the pre-cut 2 ¼” cotton batting strips in a roll. If you choose to buy the pre-cut rolls, Bosal or Zipcase make a 2 ¼” x 50-yard roll. You will need 50 yards (x 2 ¼”) of batting for the full-size rug. There are 2 ½” x 25-yard rolls available, but the 2 ¼” width batting is easier to work with, as it is slightly narrower than the jelly roll strip.

Other Supplies Needed

  • Large Spool of POLYESTER thread – at least 1200 yards to blend or contrast with your fabrics

  • Pins, Scissors, Seam ripper

  • Wonder Clips (6 or so will be enough)

  • Mary Ellen’s Best Press works well to help keep the rug lying flat, or you can use your favorite starch. We will be pressing with the starch as we go around the curves – VERY IMPORTANT.

  • Sack lunch, if desired

Pre-Class Preparation:

Having the 2 ½” fabric strips sewn together before class will make the construction of this rug go much quicker.  You can separate the strips into light, medium and dark to graduate the values (darkest on the outside looks nice), or you can use the colors randomly as they come off the roll.

1. Trim off the selvage edges before sewing strips together. Starting with the darkest (or OUTSIDE) edge strips, sew all the strips together end to end using a diagonal seam.

2. Continue until all strips are sewn together into one long strip.

3. Once the strips are all sewn together, trim the diagonal seams to ¼” and press seams open.

4. Fan-fold the long strip into 12” – 16” increments. Pin together in groups of about 10 folds.

5. Pre-wind 6 bobbins.

Do NOT sew the batting strips together before class.

Denim/Jean needles will be provided for the class by the instructor.

We will provide Brother sewing machines, but you may bring your own if you like. Be sure to bring a walking foot if you bring your own machine. Please let SQTM know if you will be bringing your own machine, so we can have your table ready for you to set it up.
